Behaviour of heavy metals in a mud flat of the Scheldt estuary, Belgium OMA
Panutrakul, S.; Baeyens, W.F.J..
The Ballasplaat intertidal mud flat in the Scheldt estuary has been polluted by Cd and Pb and also high amounts of organic matter as a result of suspended matter deposition. The degree of pollution is, however, not uniform over the mud flat due to varying physico-chemical conditions (essentially variable redox profiles). Measurements of the redox profile, and the metal concentrations in the pore water, the total sediment and the fraction <63 µm combined with sequential extraction results and enrichment factors can explain the behaviour of Cd, Pb, Fe and Mn in the sediments. In a strong anoxic sediment, where sulphate reducing bacteria are active, the heavy metals are trapped as poorly soluble metal complexes while in an oxic or suboxic sediment metals...

Carbon flows in the Westerschelde estuary (The Netherlands) evaluated by means of an ecosystem model (MOSES) OMA
Soetaert, K.; Herman, P.M.J..
The autotrophic production and heterotrophic consumption of organic matter in the Westerschelde, a highly turbid and eutrophic estuary in the Southwest Netherlands is examined by means of a dynamic simulation model. The model describes the ecologically relevant processes in thirteen spatial compartments and adequately fits most observed data. Three autotrophic processes are included in the model. Net pelagic photosynthetic production is relatively low (average 41 gC m-2 yr-1) and three spatial compartments near the turbidity maximum zone are respiratory sinks of phytoplankton biomass. According to the model, net phytobenthic primary production is more important than pelagic primary production in the upstream...

Comparative study of the hyperbenthos of three European estuaries OMA
Mees, J.; Fockedey, N.; Hamerlynck, O..
The hyperbenthic fauna of the subtidal channels of the Eems (N. Netherlands), Westerschelde (S.W. Netherlands), and Gironde (S.W. France) estuaries was sampled within a 15-day period in summer 1991. In each estuary, quantitative samples were taken at regularly spaced stations covering the entire salinity gradient from marine conditions at the mouth to nearly freshwater conditions upstream. The diversity of the samples and the distribution of the species along the main estuarine gradients were assessed. Hyperbenthic communities were identified using different multivariate statistical techniques. The species composition and the density and biomass of the dominant species of each community were compared among communities.

Distribution of benthic diatom assemblages in the Westerschelde (Zeeland, The Netherlands) OMA
Sabbe, K.; Vyverman, W..
The benthic diatom assemblages of the Westerschelde-estuary were studied by means of multivariate analysis. Two main groups and eight subgroups were distinguished. The relation with salinity and sediment composition was investigated. A clear relation between grain size and the distribution of the assemblages was found.

Estimating estuarine residence times in the Westerschelde (The Netherlands) using a box model with fixed dispersion coefficients OMA
Soetaert, K.; Herman, P.M.J..
The residence time of the water masses in the Westerschelde estuary was determined using a simple compartment-model that simulates the advective-diffusive transport of a conservative dissolved substance (chlorinity). The residence time of a water parcel in the upstream part of the estuary (i.e. the time needed for this water parcel to leave the estuary) varied from about 50 days in winter to about 70 days in summer. The most seaward compartment had residence times of about 10-15 days. Dispersive coefficients that are fixed in time were able to reproduce the observed salinity distributions very well in the Westerschelde. They were obtained by calibration on observed chlorinities. It is argued that the apparent relationship of dispersive coefficients with...

Feeding of the hyperbenthic mysid <i>Neomysis integer</i> in the maximum turbidity zone of the Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde estuaries OMA
Fockedey, N.; Mees, J..
The diet of the mysid <i>Neomysis integer</i>in the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ) of three European estuaries (Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde) was investigated in spring 1993. The quality and quantity of the diet were assessed through measurement of the stomach fullness and microscopical analysis of the stomach content combined with image analyses. <i>N. integer</i> was found to be an omnivore which mainly utilizes mesozooplankton and detritus carbon pools. The quality of the diet did not differ between the sexes or between different developmental stages, although smaller individuals consumed fewer items. In all three estuaries the diet was dominated by Copepoda Calanoida (5-10 <i>Eurytemora affinis</i>...

General description of the Scheldt estuary OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Van Eck, B.T.M.; Lambert, C.; Wollast, R.; Goeyens, L..
A general description of the Scheldt estuary, including the hydrology, the sediment transport, the productivity and the biodegradation with respect to their influence on the trace metal behaviour in the Scheldt estuary, is given. The river basin can be divided in several sections according to their morphological, hydrodynamical and sedimentary properties. The zone from km 78 to 55, which corresponds roughly with the salinity zone from 2 to 10 psu, is the zone of high turbidity, high sedimentation and of oxygen depletion, especially in the summer period. That area is called the geochemical filter because the solid/dissolved distribution of the trace metals is controlled by redox, adsorption/desorption, complexation and precipitation/coprecipitation...

Harpacticoid copepod community structure in two North Sea estuaries in relation to pollution OMA
Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R.; Vaeremans, M..
The harpacticoid copepod assemblages of two estuaries in the Netherlands, the Westerschelde and the Eems-Dollard, are compared. Both estuaries have similar physical characteristics but the Westerschelde is much more polluted than the Eems-Dollard. Harpacticoid copepod assemblages in both estuaries are similar in terms of species composition. However, there is a striking difference in quantitative characteristics : the highest annual averages of density, biomass and diversity in the Westerschelde are below the lowest annual averages in the Eems-Dollard estuary. Because both estuaries are extensively monitored, data concerning many possible causes of this difference could be compared. It is argued that it is the high load of heavy metals in the Westerschelde...

Influence of pollution on the harpacticoid copepods of two North Sea estuaries OMA
Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; Willems, K.A..
Seasonal monitoring of the meiobenthos in the Dutch estuaries revealed an anomaly in density and diversity of harpacticoid copepods in the Westerschelde. Another Dutch estuary, the Eems Dollard, has comparable hydrodynamical, physical and sedimentological, characteristics and a similar fauna, but even in the severely organically polluted oligohaline mudflats of this estuary, annual average density and diversity of endo-epibenthic harpacticoid communities are higher than at similar less enriched meso- to polyhaline biotopes of the Westerschelde. Besides the concentrations of inorganic pollutants, such as phosphates and nitrates, the concentration of pesticides, cyanide, detergents, phenols, oils, polychlorobenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and...

Nitrogen dynamics in the Westerschelde estuary (SW Netherlands) estimated by means of the ecosystem model MOSES OMA
Soetaert, K.; Herman, P.M.J..
A tentative nitrogen budget for the Westerschelde (SW Netherlands) is constructed by means of a simulation model with thirteen spatial compartments. Biochemical and chemical processes in the water column are dynamically modeled; fluxes of dissolved constituents across the water-bottom interface are expressed by means of diagenetic equations. The model is calibrated on a large amount of observed variables in the estuary (1980-1986) with relatively fine temporal and spatial detail. Additional constraints are imposed by the stoichiometric coupling of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen flows and the required conservation of mass. The model is able to reproduce rather well the observed distributions of nitrate, ammonium, oxygen and Kjeldahl nitrogen both in time and...

On the cultivation of free-living marine and estuarine nematodes OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
Although a large body of literature exists on the systematics and ecology of free-living marine and brackish-water nematodes, key questions on the nature and magnitude of interactions between nematodes and other organisms in the benthos remain unanswered. Relatively few authors have investigated live nematodes in food web studies or in experiments dealing with the nematodes' response to a varying environment. It is mainly for the latter purpose that attempts have been made to maintain, rear and cultivate selected species. This paper describes the methodology used for the maintenance, rearing, and eventual permanent agnotobiotic cultivation of a variety of estuarine nematodes. Spot plates, where small samples of sediment or macrophyte material are...

Secondary production of the brackish copepod communities and their contribution to the carbon fluxes in the Westerschelde estuary (The Netherlands) OMA
Escaravage, V.; Soetaert, K..
The zooplankton community of the brackish part of the Westerschelde estuary (November 1989-October 1990) was dominated by two calanoid copepods, <i>Eurytemora affinis</i> and <i>Acartia tonsa</i>. <i>Eurytemora</i> was present during a longer period of the year and was much more important in terms of total abundances and biomasses than <i>Acartia</i>. The secondary production of these species was estimated by means of the growth rate method, using weight-specific growth rates obtained from laboratory cultures (<i>Eurytemora</i>) or from the literature (<i>Acartia</i>). Due to the substantially higher growth rates of <i>Acartia</i> compared to <i>Eurytemora</i>,...

The fate of intertidal microphytobenthos carbon: an in situ 13C-labeling study OMA
Middelburg, J.J.; Barranguet, C.; Boschker, H.T.S.; Herman, P.M.J.; Moens, T.; Heip, C.H.R..
At two intertidal sites (one sandy and one silty, in the Scheldt estuary, The Netherlands), the fate of microphytobenthos was studied through an in situ 13C pulse- chase experiment. Label was added at the beginning of low tide, and uptake of 13C by algae was linear during the whole period of tidal exposure (about 27 mg m-2 h-1 in the top millimeter at both sites). The 13C fixed by microphytobenthos was rapidly displaced toward deeper sediment layers (down to 6 cm), in particular at the dynamic, sandy site. The residence times of microphytobenthos with respect to external losses (resuspension and respiration) were about 2.4 and 5.6 d at the...

Water quality modelling of the western Scheldt estuary OMA
Ouboter, M.R.L.; Van Eck, B.T.M.; Van Gils, J.A.G.; Sweerts, J.P.; Villars, M.T..
1n 1987 the National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management (the Netherlands) initiated the SAWES project (Systems Analysis WEstern Scheldt). The main goals of the project were to acquire knowledge with respect to the pollution problems in the Scheldt estuary and to apply this knowledge to management issues of the Scheldt on an operational level. The main interest was to understand quantitatively the relation between inputs of polluting substances and effects on the ecosystem. In the framework of the project, a water quality model for the Scheldt estuary was made. In 1995, the model area was expanded to include the Belgian coastal region at the mouth of the estuary. The model calculates the fate of discharged substances and establishes the relation...
